Andrew Gilmore comments on the charging of UK Athletics for corporate manslaughter, in City AM
09 Jan, 2025 - Fraud and Crime | by Grosvenor LawPartner Andrew Gilmore has provided comment in City AM on the charging of UK Athletics for corporate manslaughter, and its former head of sport, Keith Davies, with gross negligence manslaughter.
Commenting on the potential sentence Davies may receive, Andrew noted: “At this stage of the case, it is difficult to provide a precise view of the likely sentence, but charges of gross negligence manslaughter carry a possible maximum life sentence with a tariff of up to 18 years. In similar other cases, sentences have carried custodial terms in the range of 4 to 8 years.”
He further highlighted the substantial fine that may be imposed, commenting: “For UK Athletics, as a corporate entity, if they are convicted of offences, they would be facing a fine dependent upon their turnover, which could be as much as £20 million.”
Andrew’s comments were published online in City AM, 8 January 2024, and in print, 9 January 2024.
