Chris Roberts comments on the future of the Serious Fraud Office following recent failed prosecutions, in The Times and The Law Society Gazette

Partner Chris Roberts has provided comment in The Times and The Law Society Gazette on what lies next in store for the SFO, following the body’s dropping of all charges against the former executives of London Mining and the recent announcement of Nick Ephgrave’s departure.

Chris highlighted that there is hope for the body, stating: “Despite recent failures, the SFO certainly does still have an important role to play in the justice system. Although Ephgrave’s departure is a blow to the body, it creates an opportunity for his successor to build upon the good work he has done during his tenure.

“The legacy issues facing the SFO are not of Ephgrave’s making, nor are they of any future director. It is absolutely critical that his successor is clear-eyed and gets onto the front foot as soon as appointed to identify a complete list of issues that require attention – if they delay, the body will continue to face calls for urgent change.”

Chris’ comments were published in The Times, both online and in print, 13 -14 February 2026, and The Law Society Gazette, 16 February 2026.
