Darius Latham-Koenig comments on the criminal liability around driverless taxis, in City AM
21 Oct, 2025 - Grosvenor LawAssociate Darius Latham-Koenig has provided comment in City AM on the legalities of driverless taxis, following Waymo’s announcement that they are eyeing implementation in 2026, emphasising the complex legal issues around motoring offences and criminal liability.
Commenting on questions of legal liability, Darius noted: “Whilst confidence (or lack thereof) in driverless cars often revolves around safety considerations and the ethics of technological reliance, legal questions of liability are yet to be adequately resolved, particularly in an accident scenario.
He went on to discuss the complex legal issues surrounding autonomous vehicles, commenting: “These stretch across criminal and civil areas of debate, encompassing potential corporate manslaughter investigations versus driver fault, insurance policy premium calculations, and payment of damages based on critical control of the vehicle. The implementation of the Automated Vehicles Act 2024 should be heavily scrutinised to ensure legal clarification.”
Darius’ comments were published in City AM and syndicated in the Daily Star, 21 October 2025.
